Highways & Roads
Engineered noise barriers, retaining walls, and safety hardware tested for the demands of modern transportation infrastructure.
Learn more about Highways & RoadsThe Quebec Bridge, which extends over the St. Lawrence River from Sainte-Foy to Lévis, is currently the longest cantilever bridge in the world. Opened in 1914, the bridge supports road, rail and pedestrian traffic. However, in 2010, due to neglected repair work, the Quebec Bridge was placed on a list of 10 most threatened historic sites in Canada. Corrosion forced the Department of Transport to replace the guards on either side of the bridge bridge with steel panels to strengthen the integrity of the structure.
During the first phase of the Quebec Bridge rehabilitation project, 1.8-metre-high opaque steel noise barrier panels were installed along the west side of the bridge. While providing the required barrier performance, the solid panels significantly restricted views of the St. Lawrence River and surrounding landscape for motorists and pedestrians, leading to public concerns about their visual impact.
For the second phase of construction, transparent noise barrier panels were selected to preserve important sightlines while continuing to meet the project’s noise mitigation requirements. EKHO/BPDR was selected to design and supply transparent noise barrier panels for this historic Quebec City landmark.
The solution demonstrates how transparent bridge noise barriers can balance acoustic performance, safety, durability, and aesthetics - helping transportation infrastructure projects mitigate noise without compromising views or the surrounding environment.
