Green International Airport expansion in Rhode Island, increased UPS freight and cargo operations created the need for an effective airport noise and visual barrier along adjacent residential property lines. Designed to help mitigate operational noise and reduce visual impacts on neighboring communities, the barrier represents an important investment in both airport infrastructure and community noise mitigation.
As the first project of its kind in Rhode Island, it marks a significant milestone for RIAC and demonstrates how airport expansion and infrastructure improvements can be delivered while addressing the impacts of growing freight activity on surrounding residential communities.
The original airport noise barrier design specified 20-foot post spacing with solid concrete panels. EKHO proposed a value-engineered noise barrier solution using the NB15 system, providing a more cost-effective and efficient approach while maintaining the required acoustic and structural performance.
Working closely with AECOM and the Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) throughout the award and design process, the team revised the barrier configuration to 15-foot post spacing and incorporated EKHO’s durable, sound-absorptive noise barrier panels. The optimized design helped balance performance, constructability, long-term durability, and project cost.
The project establishes an important precedent for future airport noise mitigation and infrastructure projects in Rhode Island, demonstrating how thoughtful engineering and value engineering can help airports address operational noise while protecting nearby residential communities.
