Community Input Shapes Noise Wall

For residents along Mountain Brow Boulevard, the materials used in a neighbourhood infrastructure project mattered, and their input helped shape the final solution.
As part of the City of Hamilton’s improvements along Concession Street and Mountain Brow Boulevard, the existing traffic circle at the top of the Kenilworth Access was redeveloped into a signalized T-intersection. The broader project included road reconstruction, active transportation improvements and other infrastructure upgrades.
The original construction contract specified a wood noise attenuation wall. Neighbouring homeowners attended City Council meetings to express their preference for an absorptive noise barrier instead. Their input helped influence the City’s decision to approve the change, demonstrating how community participation can shape the infrastructure built around people’s homes.

EKHO Infrastructure Solutions manufactured and supplied ground-mounted absorptive noise barrier panels for this project. The system features 12-foot panels with post facings, helping manage roadway noise while providing a durable, finished appearance for the surrounding residential community.

Customization also played an important role. The wall curves to match the radius of the adjacent sidewalk, integrating naturally into the streetscape. Its rock pattern was coordinated with the pattern on the wall separating the roadway from the sidewalk, creating visual continuity throughout the corridor.
The entire noise barrier system received an anti-graffiti coating to support easier maintenance over the life of the wall.
The Mountain Brow Boulevard project highlights the value of listening to the people who live alongside infrastructure. By bringing their preferences to City Council, residents helped shape the choice of wall material and the lasting character of their neighbourhood.
