Adapting the Design as the Project Evolved

Project Overview

Municipal infrastructure replacement projects are a familiar part of what we do at EKHO. They may be routine investments in renewing aging infrastructure, but every site brings its own engineering requirements, and often, those requirements evolve as the project moves from design through tender and construction.

Addressing Traffic and Noise

For this culvert replacement project, EKHO worked alongside long-standing customers – VanDriel Excavation and designer – BMRoss (Goderich) as well as a the municipality (Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh), clients we have supported on previous projects. The requirement was to provide an engineered retaining solution for the wing walls supporting the new culvert.

Addressing Traffic and Noise

An Absorptive Wall Solution

The consultant, B.M. Ross, established the required wing wall geometry, including the overall lengths and heights. From there, EKHO's role was to engineer the RAR retaining wall system to work within those parameters and respond to the specific conditions of the site. As the project progressed from tender to the ready-for-construction stage, the required wall length increased. Rather than treating the original design as fixed, our team adapted the RAR design to accommodate the longer wall and coordinated the corresponding changes to material quantities and purchase orders.

Adapting to Site Conditions

Site conditions added another consideration. With the combination of wall height, surrounding slopes and water levels, additional soil reinforcement was required. EKHO recommended incorporating Geogrid reinforcement into the RAR system, developed the revised design and worked through the approval process so the project could move forward with a solution suited to the actual conditions on site.

At EKHO, we start with the project requirements and engineer the solution to fit. As requirements change, our role is to adapt the engineering, coordinate with our partners and keep the solution moving toward construction.

For the municipality, this was another important investment in replacing aging infrastructure. For EKHO, it was another opportunity to work with trusted partners and deliver an engineered retaining wall system that evolved with the project, from initial requirements through final design and supply.
