Engineered noise barriers, retaining walls, and safety hardware tested for the demands of modern transportation infrastructure.
Learn more about Highways & RoadsWhen Culvert 84-09.0 on County Road 84 (Zurich-Hensall Road) required replacement, the project called for new wing walls to support the upgraded structure while working within the requirements of the existing site.
Retain-A-Rock
The existing culvert, originally constructed around 1950, is a 5.5 m span rectangular cast-in-place concrete structure that conveys the municipal drain known as the Black Creek Drain West Brook. As part of the replacement, B.M. Ross & Associates designed the required wing walls based on the project’s specific length and height requirements.
That’s where EKHO came in.
EKHO designed and supplied the Retain-A-Rock (RAR) system to meet the wing wall requirements established by the project engineer.
A gravity wall design was selected because the large-format Retain-A-Rock units can provide the required stability through their own mass, making them well suited for this type of wing wall application. The system provides a robust retaining solution without relying on tiebacks or mechanically stabilized reinforcement, while allowing EKHO to design the wall to the specific geometry required for the project.
In this case, B.M. Ross established what the wing walls needed to be including their required height and length and EKHO engineered the Retain-A-Rock system to fit those requirements.
