Connecting Noise Protection, Safety and Community Privacy

Sectors Serviced:

Project Overview

Replacing the Highway 401 / Wilson Road overpass meant addressing both the needs of a changing highway corridor and the residential community beside it. Along with preparing for future highway widening, the project included upgrading existing noise barriers to support long-term noise protection.

Through a noise study conducted for the project, noise mitigation requirements were assessed, with the design incorporating 5-metre-high noise walls on the overpass.

One System, Dual Protection

The project marks EKHO’s first use of its MASH TL-3 crash-tested system on Highway 401. EKHO Infrastructure Solutions provided design and material supply, with Powell Foundations completing the installation. Along the highway approaches, the TL-3 system combined an absorptive noise wall with an integrated precast concrete traffic barrier. Bringing noise mitigation and roadside safety into one system provides a compact footprint, while the crash-tested design helps limit deflection and reduce collision severity.

Engineering Beyond the Wall

The design challenge extended beyond the noise wall itself. EKHO provided substantial support in coordinating the retaining wall design with the TL-3 system, helping bring the retaining structures, noise protection and roadside safety requirements together across the highway approaches.

On the bridge, EKHO’s MASH TL-4 bridge-mounted system incorporated lightweight, opaque ACRYLITE panels with fragment retention, bringing together noise protection, crash-tested safety and residential privacy. Designed for bridges and elevated structures, the system includes rails that help limit vehicle intrusion between posts and support vehicle redirection during a collision. The opaque panels provide privacy for nearby residents by blocking views from passing traffic while providing a lightweight, DSM-approved solution required for the bridge deck.
